Pond Life Kindergarten Literature Unit Printables

Scoot Pond Theme Kindergarten Literature Unit

It has been years since I have released a new Kindergarten Literature Unit Study Printable Pack but finally, we have a new one!

Teaching Kindergarten at Home

Back2homeschool bI created this new set in honor of my new session Teaching Kindergarten at Home which is debuting in the Back2Homeschool Virtual event! In my video session, I share how Kindergarten Literature units were the backbone of my Kindergarten plans with my daughter. I have always wanted to add more to our original set of 9 FREE units, and finally got this one done! I have another in the works also! If you’d like to learn more about teaching Kindergarten at Home I recommend registering for the Back2Homeschool event ASAP so you can get the early-bird price, before it goes up on July 22! I based this new set off of the book SCOOT by, Cathryn Falwell, featuring a fun pond theme!

Set the stage for your POND theme by gathering all of your pond toys and books! It helps to draw your child in and get her/him excited about your learning time together.

Don’t have a lot of pond toys and books? Ask friends, go to the library, or buy some things you think might be a good long term investment for your homeschool!

Pond Life Toys for Kids

Be sure to purchase the book SCOOT or check it out from your library. In addition to the main book, I recommend adding in all sorts of fun pond theme books to bring the theme alive!

Here is a downloadable library checklist for pond books!

We are loving our Kindergarten Literature Units,  and recently completed Mr. Cookie Baker!

Mr. Cookie Baker Kindergarten Literature Unit in Action

We spread this unit out over two weeks, doing just a little each day.

Day One

On the first day we read the book together, and worked on our cookie graph together.

Mr Cookie Baker -5747

She also completed the C is for Cookie activity, but I didn’t get a photo!

Day Two

She loves working with money, so the coin matching and counting activity was a big hit.  We played “store” and bought and sold the cookies together, practicing naming the coins and adding them up.

Practicing reading color words as she colors cookies.

Grand Finale ~ Cookie Baking

Of course we had to back cookies!  WE even used the recipe in the back of the book, which she LOVED!  My oldest son is our baker, so he led the entire process, which took a couple of days!

Goose ~ Kindergarten Literature Unit in Action

We are back to doing a Kindergarten Literature Unit, consistently now and just finished Goose! I am finding myself getting sentimental about her Kindergarten year coming to a close and want to fit in as many fun units like this that I can!

Goose Kindergarten Literature Unit in Action

I usually set up a central area for our theme focus but we didn’t own 1 single goose so we compromised and brought a basket of birds along for our unit.  A basket of stuffed birds and the book was the extent of our theme set up…simple and just perfect.  She loved having the birds with us all week!  I forgot to take a picture though!

We spread this unit out over two weeks, doing just a little each day.

Day One

We spent a lot of time just reading and discussing the book on day one!  We then went on to our first and only activity, sorting mammals and birds. This was a new concept for her so we took a long time discussing the differences together!

Day Two

G is for…

Goose -5220

Making patterns with eggs. adult and baby geese…

Goose -5227

Goose -5228

She really enjoyed the character connection which talked about how God made the goose special with her ability to fly.  We then discussed ways he made Ladybug special. She chose the ones she wanted and colored a picture of herself.

Goose -5229

Day Three

Day three, she painted a goose.  That was it.  Then we waited for it to dry and she cut it out and put it together!

Goose -5346

Day Four

Working on reading number words one-ten with our 3 part card matching.

Goose -5276

Life cycle of a goose

Rhyming words

Day Five

Sequencing the story…

Day Seven

We did something new with the tracing numbers printable.  I drew colored starting dots on each number and then laid the markers out.  Before she traced the numbers she had to pick the matching marker to use.  She really liked this!

Goose -5425  Goose -5431Goose -5419

Day Eight

We worked on the other character connection, which was VERY applicable to her right now!  She is struggling in her gymnastics class and wanting things to be easier.  We are focusing on making positive statements there and trying, and not saying I can’t!  This activity taught the word perseverance and contrasted it with quitting.  Then we sorted phrases together to discuss the meanings.

Goose -5461

The Bible verse was also a great fit, as she traced we discussed.

Goose -5466

Day Nine

For our final activity, she did the comprehension questions!  She is even beginning to read some of them herself now!

Our next Kindergarten Literature Unit Study Printable Pack is ready!  I have the rest of my daughter’s year mapped out and hope to make a few more literature unit studies, or at least Kindergarten Printable Packs for her. The literature units take me much more time, but I sure love using them.  We will see what unfolds, I’m not promising any more after this, but it is strong possibility!
