Shooting Sight Words ~ Learning to Read is FUN!

Shooting Sight Words with a Nerf Gun! Great Word Fun for Kids!

Years ago when Krash was learning to read, my husband took over homeschool one day.  This was what I walked in and saw ~ shooting sight words with Nerf guns!

Shooting Sight Words with Nerf Gun! Shoot Sight Words with Nerf Gun!

Needless to say, this was a FAVORITE way to practice sight words for my son and we brought the idea back recently with my daughter who was reviewing her You Can Read sight words! She LOVED it and Krash helped her out and enjoyed being a part of the fun again.  He remembered doing this when he was younger!

You Can Read Review - Shoot Sight Words with Nerf Gun!

We just write the words she is reviewing in bubbles on a dry erase board.

Shoot Sight Words with Nerf Gun!

She uses the Nerf darts with the suction cups on the ends to shoot the word I call out! Simple, effective and FUN!  Lots of giggles too!

See a video clip of us playing here on YouTube, or the shorter version here on Instagram! In the longer video below you’ll see we switched to sentences instead of bubbles in the end.  This is another variation of making the game work in different ways.

You Can Read Sight Words ~ Unit 4

We are in full swing now with You Can Read since we officially started back to homeschool on August 11!  Along with adding these new words, we also reviewed the previous 12 words from unit one, unit two, and unit 3.

You Can Read Sight Words Unit 4

Here’s a post sharing You Can Read Unit Four with Krash when he did it!  See all of Krash’s Kindergarten posts here.

Unit Organization

You can see how we store ALL of our You Can Read stuff here.  For current units I use thisYou-Can-Read--7714_thumb11[1] metal file container {Target} and hanging folders.  The pink ones are You Can Read units, the yellow are her Kindergarten Literature Unit Study Printables. I have a daily lesson plan for both in a sheet protector in the front.  The You Can Read printable lesson plan is here.

I have been asked a lot how we do things so I am trying to outline it for you as much as possible!  I am not sure if I will blog all the way through You Can Read like this, but if it is helpful, I might, let me know! Below you will see exactly what we did on each day and how I spread it out.

She was not happy with me.  I didn’t laminate her puzzles, just used cardstock and that was not to her liking.  She grumbled through the entire thing.

Day Five

We began with finding words in sentences.  I had her use two different colors of markers.

You Can Read Unit 4 -0204

She used pink to circle words from this week, and purple to circle any other words she remembered from previous weeks!  Then we read them together, she reads circled words, I read un-circled words.

She loves playing memory with her color by number sight words combined with the words Krash made when he was in Kindergarten.  Once we are done for the week, we laminate hers and add them with his and play!

She didn’t learn all 4 words as quickly, and I noticed a bit of memory loss with review words, but was totally fine with that!  I knew a review week was coming next, and we needed it! Our next post will share all we did for a solid review week!

You Can Read Sight Words Unit 3

We are still a bit slower with You Can Read due to our relaxed summer homeschool routine!  We spread this unit out over a couple of weeks. Along with adding these new words, we also reviewed the previous 8 words from unit one and unit two.

Here’s a post sharing You Can Read Unit Three with Krash when he did it!  See all of Krash’s Kindergarten posts here.

Day One

Here’s a before shot showing what we did together on the first day with unit three.  We focused a LOT on the sight word caterpillar and instead of hanging him on a wall we are using our pocket chart so we can take the circles down and use them during the lessons.

She learned these words quickly, I didn’t do all of the activities with her.  It was time to move on! I adjust each week based on how quickly she masters the words.  With You Can Read I don’t move on without mastery, or very close to it.  If she doesn’t know them we just keep playing with them until she does, that’s why I provide TONS of activities to choose from to take the units as far as you might need to!

Personal Word Wall Printables

Personal Word Wall Printables

In the past I have used a few different kinds of word walls.  Most recently I used a large portable word wall with Krash when he did You Can Read.  For Ladybug, I wanted simple and small and opted for a personal word wall in a file folder. I created some simple printables, trimmed the edges, glued them in and DONE!

As we go through You Can Read, we will add words to her word wall once she can read them independently. You can see in the photo below the words she knows in the letter A section.  I am writing in pencil in case we make any mistakes.

I added a handwriting chart to the back side of the word wall, for easy reference in case needed.  I had some extra space so it seemed like a logical addition.

You Can Read Sight Words ~ Unit 2

You Can Read Sight Words Unit 2

We slowed down with You Can Read while we enjoyed a total school break and some vacation time!  We spread this unit out over a few weeks, only working on days she asked me to.  She learned these 4 words so quickly! Along with adding these new words, we also reviewed the previous 4 words.  She is really doing well, it seems I hit the sweet spot of her being ready to read, I am glad I waited!

Here’s a post sharing You Can Read Sight Words Unit Two with Krash when he did it!  See all of Krash’s Kindergarten posts here.
