2nd Grade Year-End Review of Homeschool Curriculum Choices

2nd Grade Homeschool Curriculum Year End Wrap Up

The homeschool curriculum choices blog posts are great, but what I really want to know is what families thought AFTER they used the curriculum they chose! I will be sharing a series of posts with you; evaluating our choices in each grade level from this homeschool year.

First up, 2nd grade!  Here’s a reminder of the original 2nd Grade Curriculum Choices post.

2nd Grade Subjects

Below I will give a small review of each subject, if you have more specific questions about anything, just leave me a comment and I will do my best to answer!

Math ~ Teaching Textbooks 3, Life of Fred, Spielgaben

Teaching Textbooks 3 was her main math curriculum and it was a perfect fit for her. I highly recommend starting with TT from the beginning, which is usually 2nd or 3rd grade. She will be moving onto TT 4 next year for 3rd grade!

2nd Grade Teaching Textbooks 3 (1 of 1)

We loved using Spielgaben to supplement our math lessons and will definitely continue with this. Spielgaben was particularly helpful in bringing a hands-on aspect to some of the more difficult concepts.

Exploring Place Value with Spielgaben Exploring Division with Spielgaben Exploring Area with Spielgaben Making Math Come Alive with SpielgabenGraphing with Spielgaben Exploring 3D Shapes with Spielgaben Exploring Parallel Lines with Spielgaben

We LOVE Life of Fred but sadly we let it slip away. I hope to get back to reading the books to her next year.

Reading Loads of Books and Reading Comprehension 2nd Grade

She read SO many books this year! I tried to keep up with all of them here but after about 80 books I lost track. She is definitely my bookworm. I just step in to try to balance her choices with a few of my choices!

This reading comprehension workbook was a great fit for her and she enjoyed it. I bought her the next level for the upcoming school year!

2nd Grade Reading Comprehension

Grammar ~ First Language Lessons Level 2 & Growing with Grammar 2

I continue to love this combo for grammar! We will be using Growing with Grammar Level 3 in the fall, and we are done with First Language Lessons! We don’t use level 3-4 of FLL, only 1 & 2. We will be adding Grammar Galaxy in the fall as well!

2nd Grade Growing with Grammar

Spelling ~ All About Spelling Level 2

All About Spelling continues to be a good fit for my kids and we will be moving on to level 3 in the fall!

2nd Grade All About Spelling 2

Geography ~ Evan-Moor Beginning Geography

I picked this book up at a homeschool convention and am so glad I did! It was just perfect for her!

2nd Grade Geography

Science ~ Apologia Swimming Creatures {with Krash, 5th grade}

Daddy taught this to the younger kids together and they loved it! They technically aren’t done with the entire book but will be doing some lessons this summer to finish!

 Science -8182 Science -6407

History ~ The Mystery of History 2

Daddy also teaches history and while it isn’t the favorite of the kids, we love it!

History -8217

Art  ~ Home Art Studio 2nd Grade and Holiday Arts & Crafts

She LOVES art. I do not. We do much more art in the summer than we do during the school year. We will be continuing with Home Art Studio and also enrolling her in some local art classes if possible!

Home Art Studio Project -9569 Home Art Studio -14-42nd grade -7068

Drop out Subjects ~ Handwriting, Bible

I had grand plans of reviewing cursive handwriting {which she formally learned last year}, but got slack and never followed through. I also had planned to do Picture Smart Bible with K and L together and also didn’t follow through. It was much harder this year to combine L and K because of K’s gymnastics schedule.

Stay tuned, I will be sharing our year-end review for 5th and 9th soon. I will also be sharing our curriculum choices for 9th grade, 6th grade and 3rd grade.

Homeschool Grammar Plans for 3rd Grade

I love finding new curriculum, and recently I found something new that I LOVE! I have been trying it out with my daughter to see if it’s a good fit and it is SUCH a good fit, we are just moving right along instead of waiting until fall to begin! She loves it!

Our new addition is Grammar Galaxy!

Grammar Galaxy -18

{Disclaimer – affiliate links are used}

This curriculum is totally different than anything I have seen and I am certain that is the reason she is hooked. She LOVES me reading aloud to her which is a main component to this program. This is not something you can hand your child and send them off to do it independently.

There are two different portions, one is the Mission Manual and one is the book which I have on my iPad. I read the chapter to her and then we go to the Mission Manual together and do the “work” which is described as a mission – making it seem less like work and more like fun!

Grammar Galaxy -14-2 Grammar Galaxy -14

For next year we will be using Grammar Galaxy {if she doesn’t finish it this summer} and will continue with Growing with Grammar {level 3}. GWG is a traditional workbook and her more independent grammar workbook. I like the combo, but you absolutely could just use Grammar Galaxy alone! It exposes so much more than just grammar.

Grammar Galaxy: Nebula, the first in a series of language arts texts for first to sixth graders, teaches:

  • reading skill development
  • literary concepts
  • vocabulary
  • spelling
  • grammar
  • composition and
  • speaking

Wondering how I print digital curriculum affordably?

The First Month of 9th Grade Homeschool

9th Grade

In the past I have done one big wrap up post for all three of my kids.  I may go back to that but for now I wanted to do a post for each grade level, since I have more to share about each of my children this year.

Here is the post about the curriculum choices we made for him.

#9thGradeWithPacMan

9th grade has brought many changes for our oldest son!  He is no longer doing “group subjects” with his younger siblings, and is working on his own for everything!  I am more involved with him this year and really enjoying my time with him.

We use Lessontrek for weekly planning. Here’s a peek at one of his recent lesson plans. I type them up each weekend to prepare for Monday. He uses this to guide him through his week. At the end of the week I record all of his grades from the paper into Lessontrek online since we use their Gradebook feature.

WRITING

One of our big changes is with writing. This is our first year using IEW and so far so good! He is using Student Writing intensive Level C and I am watching the DVD classes with him and then he works on his own.

9th-Grade--61834

Honestly, it was a bit strange at first, so different than what we used previously. We are in the middle of unit 4 now and I am certain we made the right decision! This is a better fit for us and the whole subject of writing is flowing better now.

SPANISH

I am in LOVE with Homeschool Spanish Academy!  They offered to give us free classes to see if we liked it and I am blown away! DEFINITELY a good fit for us! He takes two classes a week with a private teacher via Skype! The teachers are located in Guatemala and are fluent in Spanish and English. He has learned so much already and I just love that I don’t have to do ANYthing. I was dreading high school foreign language credit and now I am not.

9th Grade -6369[3]

HISTORY

Notgrass World History is another new curriculum for us and I am in love with this one too! We began with plans to earn the History and Bible credit {this course offers 3 credits if you do it entirely – English, History, Bible}. After about a week, we decided to drop the Bible portion and just earn the history credit. He is eliminating the Bible memory work, extra Bible reading and Bible projects. We never planned on him using this as an English credit, so there’s some eliminated by dropping that.  The history credit alone is enough work and we feel it is a great fit.

9th Grade -4928[3]

He works a lot on his own, but comes to me for quizzes and tests.  Below he was taking a history quiz at my desk.

Homeschool--71754

FINANCE

We LOVE Foundations in Personal Finance! Originally I planned on him doing this independently but I have enjoyed the videos, and we have great discussion a few times a week! This is a great course!!!

9th Grade -6253

SCIENCE

Ahhh, science. Daddy is in charge of science. BUT I am getting a tad bit more interested. Apologia Biology is great but hasn’t been the easiest for him. After module 2 we decided to purchase the DVD to see if it would help. We LOVE the DVD!!!  It is definitely an investment, but one we decided was worth it. The video lessons are so well done and even my son admitted they were really helpful. His score on the module 3 test was significantly better than his scores on test 1 and 2!

Apologia Biology DVD

GEOGRAPHY

We both love Northstar Geography. He does this almost 100% on his own, I love the layout, organization of the lessons, and all that he is learning.

NorthStarGeography

MATH

Teaching Textbooks Geometry is definitely not easy, but I can’t imagine doing this without Teaching Textbooks! He does this on his own and is doing well, but he has learned that studying well for the tests is very important now. Math has come easily for him, but this is a bit more challenging as he learns all new concepts and ideas with a lot of memorization required.

TT Geometry

ALL THE REST

Although not an official school subject, his computer-love is going strong!  He has been building his own computer for almost a year now and recently he get some of the final parts. He showed an interest and we had 3 old CPUs sitting in storage and we told him he could take them apart and do whatever he wanted to learn! He mostly learned through dissecting those and using working parts to build one and then buying parts he needed. I had no idea he would be able to do what he can do, I thought he would just mess around with our old broken computers for awhile. Turns out he was able to teach himself a LOT! I’ve lost the ability to comprehend it all. So proud of his ability to learn, save $, and work through tough issues to reach success!! Here’s a video on Instagram showing the moment he started it up!

9th Grade -6574[3]

Other fun news, he decided to join a year round swim team! We are looking forward to the new adventure as a swim family as we support him! That’s him in one of those lanes swimming!

Teaching Textbooks Math Works For Us!

We Love Teaching Textbooks Math

{disclaimer ~ Teaching Textbooks is a blog sponsor, we used them for years prior to this and are thankful for this new adventure}

Both of my boys have used Teaching Textbooks math for years. Our daughter began in 2nd grade with Level 3!  I get asked a lot about this choice for our family and wanted to share our thoughts!

We came from Calvert Math and Singapore Math, and the short answer to the change was simplicity. I needed a more student-directed math rather than a teacher-intensive math program.

Levels we have used…

For Ladybug

For Krash ~

For PacMan ~

Ladybug is our only child who will have used TT from the very beginning using Math 3  for 2nd grade! I love continual review for math and really feel TT gives just enough without going overboard.

2nd Grade -5011

Before we made the decision to use Teaching Textbooks, I researched and I researched, and I researched more. Seriously, I probably read every blog post and review out there. In the end we decided to give it a try and my husband and I decided if we didn’t feel it was thorough enough and their end of grade test scores suffered we would reevaluate.

8th grade -2456

We have revaluated and are sticking with Teaching Textbooks! It is working for our boys and their test scores are proving that so far! Our state requires testing so this year we used the CAT online and I took a screenshot of their math scores so you can see. Krash scored in the 99th percentile and Pac scored in the 94th percentile. I took screenshots from their results page.

MAth 2016 Pac Math 2016

A bit of background about my boys. Pac is actually our natural learner, he learns easily and math has always been a subject he doesn’t mind and even enjoys most of the time. Krash struggles with auditory processing so we really like the visual portion of TT for him and it HAS helped. I honestly wasn’t expecting Krash to do so well on his end of grade test, he sweetly surprised us! His Dad does math with him and often they go over the lesson together in the book before he goes to the computer to actually listed to and do the lesson. This extra step has really helped him.

We have no plans of switching math programs for any of our kids and hope to use Teaching Textbooks all the way through. We are very glad it ended up being a good fit for our family, especially since we can reuse the levels with each of our children.

If you are curious about Teaching Textbooks and thinking of making the switch, they have placement tests for you to use!
