Hands on USA Geography

Hands on USA States and Capitals Fun

Learning U.S.A. Geography doesn’t have to be boring. We have a few favorite resources for hands on U.S.A. states and capitals fun that I want to share with you today. If you are looking to add a few resources to your homeschool supply stash, these would be the three I recommend.

Our very favorite is Sequence States and Capitals. They ask to play this outside of school time, which is wonderful.  I love when they really enjoy a game that provides excellent natural review. I highly recommend this game!

We also really like Scrambled States. This isn’t one they choose outside of school time, but when we play, they enjoy it. There’s an easy and a harder way to play.

We also have a new favorite, you can see the full review here, with a video! Educents sent us this awesome USA Map Wall Play Set and we look forward to using this for fun review all year long! There’s also a mini set here if you don’t have space for the big set!

Already this has been a fabulous resource, and I am so thankful to have it!  It will provide loads of hands-on review!

We were excited to get the USA Map Wall Play Set by Mona MELisa Designs for review! I was very excited about this and just knew it would be perfect as we review our states this year! Our set came rolled in a sturdy tube, rolled up smoothly.

I decided to put it on our dry erase board but it can be put right on the wall we just already had the board mounted and this was the perfect spot in the school room!

I got it set up in preparation for the homeschool year to begin and my 7 year old daughter spotted it and immediately became engaged. Yes, the dog likes it too.

I told her I was going to add 3-4 more states on the perimeter for her to place each day.  She begged for more right away!

My ten year old son took notice a few days later and got in on the action, although she was pretty territorial with her map.

She shooed him away after kindly letting him place a couple of things and got back to work on her own.

Mom’s Final Thoughts…

My main concern was durability and I couldn’t wait to get my hands on the small pieces to see if I felt they would really resist ripping and wrinkling. I am pleased to say that I am very impressed so far. They really do bend and twist as shown in the video on this page.

Here’s a bit about the material the map is made out of. As a mom I was concerned about these things. Now that I have seen it and felt it, I can say it’s true!

  • A fabric that is endlessly adhesive because it’s cleanable – all it needs is a little rubbing alcohol
  • A fabric that is durable – tearing and ripping is out of the question
  • A fabric that has maximum versatility – walls become a creative canvas
  • A fabric that is safe for every family – No BPA, lead or PVC

My goal in using this map for our homeschooling this year is to consistently review state locations, names, and capitals. We learned all of them last year and this map came at a perfect time for a fun way to provide hands-on review. I am thrilled!

I definitely recommend investing in this map if you are looking for something interactive like this. Initially I thought it was a  bit pricey but now that we have it I see it is totally different than other wall decal sets we have used in the past.

USA Geography Wrap-Up

USA Homeschool Geography with Elementary Students

We had a fun year with USA Geography in our homeschool and I thought I’d do a wrap-up post to share what we thought about how our year of learning went. When we began I wondered if we would make it through all 50 states and I am thrilled to say we DID!

My goal for my 4th grader was mastery of state locations and capitals with exposure to all of the other fun details. The goal for my 1st grader was entirely exposure. She will go through this again in 3rd or 4th grade with me.

We had lots of fun together usually about 2 days per week. Here’s a reference list with links to all materials we used this year with our 1st and 4th grader…

    A Review in Photos & Videos…

Each photo below is linked to the blog post it came from, so be sure to click if you want to read more!

First, here is the video I made at the beginning of the year with

our initial plan

.  We mostly stuck to this plan, and added a few things in.

The State by State Activity Pack pages from Crafty Classroom were perfect for my kids. They both love to color so this was usually a relaxed and fun activity.

We used these books for our reference guides as we learned about each state and filled in our sheets!

Near the end of the year I added in a new set of States and Capitals worksheets that I created for review.  We will continue to use those to reinforce state locations and capitals.

The Readeez 50 States song comes HIGHLY recommended by my kids, they love it and can both sing their states in ABC order thanks to the awesome tune and video! Here’s a peek of a video clip when we were listening to the Readeez song!

We continue to use our USA PowerPoint for review. As we got into the later states, we wouldn’t go all the way back to review, but would pick up where I felt they needed to.

Our magnets from Barker Creek were awesome and we added them to our magnetic board all year. These were especially great to review abbreviations.

Our games were loads of fun and great for review.  They loved game day and we had them often.  Our 2 favorites are Sequence States and Capitals and Scrambled States.

Krash enjoyed the Stack the States app a lot for review. He loved that the work we did made him better at the game!

U.S.A. States and Capitals Worksheets

USA States and Capitals Worksheets

We have been learning all about the United States of America this year, with an emphasis on locations and capitals. I have been using our U.S.A. geography plan that I shared here with my 1st and 4th grader.  I will expect my 4th grader to master this, the 1st grader is participating mostly for exposure.

USA States and Capitals Worksheets

We are almost done with all 50 states and all along I have wanted review worksheets to use with them but I didn’t like any I found online so I finally took the time to make my own.  We will be using these as a review starting now and working until the end of our homeschool year.

We personally go in ABC order with states, so I am sharing that version for free here!  I have had others ask for a regional version, so I took time to create that version also and put it in my Teacher’s Notebook Shop and Educents Shop.

Each version has a worksheet and an answer key. Here’s a peek at the ABC order version…

Below you can see my kids using the first worksheet. I scaled it down to print half size to save on printing. I had to help Ladybug a lot, which is fine, she is joining just for exposure.  Krash was able to do it all on his own and actually LOVED it.  He begged to do the rest all in one day!

We will continue to use these for review, I am glad I finally created something I like!  Hope may of you enjoy it too!

USA Geography Homeschool Plan ~ Elementary

United States Geography Homeschool Plan for Elementary

I didn’t focus on USA geography for the past couple of years, but we did intensely when PacMan was younger.  It’s time to bring it back as Ladybug goes into 1st grade and Krash into 4th.  It’s a great time to combine them together and I developed a plan that I think they both will enjoy!

USA Geography-8341

I combined a few different resources together to create my plan and I will share those with you in this post, there’s a video below too!  Here’s the short list of what we are using…

USA PowerPoint  StatePack

I liked the printable pages from USA State by State and we already owned StickerUSA which came with a disk of downloads {this no longer comes with the book so you’d have to order extra stickers or make copies}.  On the disk was a printable set of state birds and state flowers, so we are using those.  We are also using the flashcards from the StickerUSA book. Rounding out our plan will be my USA Geography PowerPoint Show, which has been redone recently.

Here’s a video I made sharing all of our resources with you and how we plan to use them.

Books

These are the books we will be using to reference during our learning time together.

NG Kids United States Atlas   Student Atlas

Goals

  • Locate state on a map
  • Know the capital
  • Know the abbreviation
  • Be familiar with – bird, flower, resources, special facts

Weekly Plan

My goal is to learn 2 new states per week, but I say that loosely!  I know we probably won’t do more than that, but we may only get to 1 per week.  I will do this with Krash and Ladybug at the same time.  We will go through the PowerPoint together, read from the books I chose, and fill out the notebooking page together!

Games & More

We have a few other great USA resources and will fit them is as time allows!
