All About Reading Level 1 ~ On Sale!

I am so excited to share the news with you!  All About Reading Level 1 is ready for purchase AND they are offering 10% off this week only for the launch!

I was blessed to receive the Level 1 Kit {shown in the photo above} to review and have just begun using it with Krash! We were also sent the Deluxe Reading Interactive Kit and love it all!

I am busy preparing it all and so far I LOVE what I have seen.  Seems to be the perfect combination of phonics, vocabulary, fluency, & comprehension.  I believe ALL are important.  You also know I believe sight words are an important part of learning to read and I just love what AAR has done with the teaching of sight words.  The words that cannot be sounded out have a little “bad guy” printed on them with a sign that says “Rule Breaker” ~ how cute is that?  It reminds the student that some words don’t follow the rules we learn and need to be memorized by sight from the very beginning.  The first Rule Breaker word is “the” and appears in lesson 3.

Krash and I have completed 1 lesson so far and it was exactly the type of thing I was looking for {even though I didn’t even really know I was looking}.  He needs some extra hands on work and some phonological awareness work {auditory/verbal} with sounds.  He is flying through sight words with You Can Read and doing well with phonics, but this is just the perfect addition for him.

Here is a peek at our set-up.  This photo was snapped in the middle of our first lesson, Krash had to remove himself for a potty break!IMG_7520

I will also be starting All About Reading Level Pre-1 with Ladybug in January-more details to come on that too!

12 Days of Christmas ~ Christmas Around the World Calendar Connections

My wonderful friend Shannon is still working with me to create the Calendar Connections cards. She is a fellow inner city missionary with me and also a homeschooler {and former school teacher}.

We chose the theme of Christmas Around the World for December!

The facts are written at a 3-6th grade level but you will be able to water them down for younger kids. It’s a great way to involve your entire family in exploring a particular theme.

The cards fit my particular pocket chart calendar {which is currently IN STOCK at Oriental Trading}, item # IN-62/2017.

but you could use a poster foam board and velcro to easily create your own set up. You could also use a standard pocket chart. They seem like they would fit in this calendar on Amazon but I am not certain.

I am now creating smaller sets to go along with the small pocket charts found recently in the Target $1 section. Here is what they look like…

Calendar Connections Small Christmas

Be sure to visit this post for a tutorial of how to sew your $1 pocket chart into a calendar!

There is also a new sheet included to be used in a Calendar Notebook if you are using those too!

I printed my numbers on cardstock and laminated them before cutting them apart.

You can download these for FREE here!

You can use most of our Calendar Connections cards for any month! We are slowly building up what we hope will be a wide variety of themes to choose from!

12 Days of Christmas ~ Advent Adventures in Homeschool

Advent is a special time for many families and the choices of how to celebrate and make this time meaningful are bursting up all over the internet.  Below are many of the ideas I have found, I recommend choosing one that would work for your family and get cracking.  But, don’t feel too badly if you are a Jesse Tree drop out like myself ~ just do what you can!  Choose something you can handle and have fun with it!  I always used to beat myself up if I didn’t do it “the right way” and then I realized that even my lame-o way {using my 5 year olds terminology} is better than no way.

We will be using Truth in the Tinsel this year, which combines the idea of an Advent countdown with a Jesse Tree all wrapped up in fun crafts for little ones.

Knowing my drop-out tendencies, I knew I needed to prepare in advance and have a simple system.  This is what I decided on.

IMG_7391 I got 24 brown paper bags, and put the supplies for each day {the small specific ones} in each bag.  I used the printable numbers from this site, and laminated them so I could use them again next year.  I hung the bags up with thumb tacks on my bulletin board strips that we normally display the kids’ school work on.  Hopefully this will be a daily reminder and I won’t drop out this year!  I plan to do more than 1 per day on some days since we are traveling this year and also since we won’t be doing the crafts on weekends.  We are making it work for us!  My motto from last year’s Christmas activities will be in place too: Mommy’s ATTITUDE matters way more than the ACTIVITIES.

Here are my other favorite Advent/Jesse Tree printables online.  All of these are free…
