Exploring Shapes with Spielgaben

Playful Learning with Spielgaben is our monthly post sharing Spielgaben in action!  If you missed the introduction to this series, you can see it here. We were given the Spielgaben set to review and are honored to have them as a blog sponsor.

Exploring Shapes with Spielgaben

Exploring Shapes

We have been using our Spielgaben set to explore shapes this month. As we continue on with a very loose 1st grade math plan, I choose concepts I want to expose her to before beginning a more formal math program in 2nd grade.

Math Manual, Part 3, Chapter 1 ~ Play 28: Let’s Make Shapes

We have obviously worked with shapes before, so this was an extension of what she already knew.  For this lesson she learned the word vertex and we made vocabulary cards to go along to reinforce our new words.

Her other new word was quadrilateral, and we had fun making quadrilaterals together both with the balls and also the sticks.

Math Manual, Part 3 Chapter 1 ~ Play 29: I Want to Be a TriangleSpielgaben Math Play 29

This was a neat lesson built into a fun game.  We used 3 dice each with 1-6 on them.  We organized the sticks in groups as shown below.

Spielgaben -4334

We took turns rolling the dice and using the corresponding stick to build {or not build} a triangle, learning different things along the way – like the fact that you can’t build a triangle every time!

As we moved along she learned about an isosceles triangle!

Spielgaben -4345

We also learned about an equilateral triangle!

See more math fun we have had with Spielgaben!

Accordion Book Printables

Accordion Book Printables

When my kids were little they loved mini accoridion books.  Something about the design really drew their attention.  My daughter especially loved them, begging me to make them with her.  I never really put all of the accordion books I created all in one place until now!

On the new Accordion Book page you’ll find all of these and I hope to add more in the future!  Alphabet, Shapes & Numbers, Bugs, Farm and Ocean are there now!

Download all of these for free here!

Tot Time Notebook ~ Numbers and Shapes

My boys still use their  Calendar Notebooks, and Ladybug still uses her Tot Time Notebook!

She already has 26 Alphabet sheets for her, in her notebook and recently I added shapes and numbers!

Tot Time Numbers and Shapes

I included numbers 1-10…

Each page is just printed on paper and slid into heavy weight sheet protector {I only use the heavyweight ones if I want it to erase easily}.  She uses thin Expo markers and Expo click markers.  These wipe off very easily with an eraser.  She also has dry erase crayons and sometimes uses these-I have to wipe these off with a bit more muscle.  If your little one can’t handle not drawing on everything else with a dry erase marker-I would recommend using the dry erase crayons!

I added this set to the Tot Time Notebook webpage and also to my Teacher’s Notebook Shop, since some prefer it!  The set is FREE in both places!

Remember, this notebook can be as versatile as you can think of-you can make your own with any printables inserted into sheet protectors.  You can take it with you and also use it at home!  Although it is named the Tot Time Notebook-I am sure it is easy to see that it can be used for older children as well!

See my new Tot Time Notebook webpage here where I will add anything new I make, or any other printables I find online that would be neat for the notebook.
