Kindergarten with Krash

K-with-Krash2_thumb1122

It has been a very eventful summer for us and although Krash has been doing tons of school stuff in his free time, I haven’t gathered it together for a blog post!   He is HIGHLY motivated by the summer challenge and has earned over 80 points! Here he is showing off one of his prizes {Kung Zhu from Target clearance aisle, pets were only $2.50!}IMG_7871

Another fun prize the boys worked together to earn was the Angry Birds game, which is awesome!!!IMG_0066

You Can Read Button 200x200

We have been working with unit 6 from You Can Read  lately.  I haven’t taken many photos of him at work because he has been flying through his work faster than ever. Here’s a glimpse into the You Can Read work he has done recently…

We used our Education Cubes to play with our words.  First I had him take his word cards {laminated and cut versions of his Color by # Sight Words} and lay them around the school room floor.  He also chose a friend to help him.  I rolled the cube for him {or he did if he wanted to}…IMG_0852

He had to read the word and then run to find it as fast as he could. After the turtle found the word, he gave the word to me.  We kept going until all review words were found!

Random Summer Learning Fun …

We have enjoyed our themes this summer, although haven’t done nearly as much as I had hoped to do! I was amazed with how much Krash enjoyed learning the facts from the 4th of July Calendar Connections cards! He also really enjoyed playing the graphing game from the Independence Day Printables set.

IMG_7850 IMG_7860

Visiting the actual Liberty Bell was MUCH more exciting for him since he “knew” what it was!!IMG_0114

We had fun with our bug theme, the highlight being the butterfly book the boys worked on TOGETHER! I love how it turned out and the effort they put into it. Yes, I admit they did earn points for the summer challenge-2 a piece, but it was worth it to see the end result!IMG_0062

Lately we have been exploring ponds and having our “updoors” neighbors over a ton. Our living situation is a long story but here’s the basics…my parents own an apartment above the schoolroom and our friends and ministry partners live in it. They are currently caring for 5 nieces and nephews due to major illness in the family. They are a young couple and only married less than 2 years. We have opened up our home to them so they can have more space. A tiny 2 bedroom apartment isn’t exactly perfect for 5 rambunctious children!! Our kids LOVE this arrangement and it has actually been fun having a few more “students” sometimes!

Here’s Krash with L, who I teamed up with him one day to work on his frog life cycle craft.IMG_0756

One day we did a group drawing lesson and all learned to draw a frog…

IMG_0735 IMG_0758

Krash particularly likes all of the stuffed friends we add to the schoolroom for any theme we do. They always join him to work. Here he was working on the rhyming words and what’s the difference from the Pond Life Preschool Pack.IMG_0848

He has done tons of outside playing, and yes he got another haircut in the midst of the summer, I love it!

IMG_0563  IMG_0802

He learns gobs of social skills when we have his younger friend J over. J is even feistier than Krash and this is a wonderful learning experience for both of them!

IMG_6290  IMG_6296

Lots of indoor playing too, on the way too hot days. Building with Guidecraft City Blocks is always a favorite…IMG_6430

He is also really enjoying our new felt sets from Betty Lukens!IMG_9987

Tot School ~ Letter Oo {part 1}

~Ladybug is currently 27.5 months old~

Again, we have had a very low key school week, without any sort of schedule.  Ladybug was content playing outside mostly so we actually did very little school work!

The set-up for her shelves was based around our summer theme: POND LIFE, I did a simple set-up with some fun pond items for all 3 kiddos…IMG_0659

I always set up a theme book shelf which ends up occupying Ladybug for hours each week.

Our bean bag chairs are still a big favorite!IMG_0673

On her other shelves I set out a new batch of toys.  We mixed up her nesting blocks and her “Who Lives Where?” game pieces…IMG_0689

She played with the beach felt board setIMG_9974

and also the ABC felt board set.  She loved both but REALLY loved the ABC setIMG_0780

Pond Sensory Bin

In honor of our upcoming pond theme that I am planning for the kids, I made the them a Pond Life Sensory Bin

IMG_7243

The kids won’t see it until we do our pond unit, but I went ahead and made a few bins last week while the boys were still out of town {they are back now, finally!!!!}.

Basically I gathered every frog, turtle, dragonfly, and fish I had and put them together to make the pond.IMG_7249

I used blue aquarium rocks as the base and placed shiny rocks around inside also.…IMG_7255

Maybe I will get really brave and let them take it outside one day and add water to it!!!

A bit of info on where I got some of the stuff

Here’s a few more Pond Sensory Bins I found online…

If you haven’t read the Montessori Minute post about sensory play, be sure to read that to see why these bins are so wonderful for kids!

Pocket Chart Printables

While reading the book, I Like Bugs, with Krash one night an idea hit me.

image

He really enjoyed the book and asked me to read it several times. My days of teaching Kindergarten flooded back to me and the image of a pocket chart popped into my head.

So what did I do?

I said goodnight and jumped on the computer to create my first set of Pocket Chart Printables! I can’t sleep when an idea hits me and I wanted to act on his love for the book and have it ready for him the next day!Pocket Chart Printables I Like Bugs

What did we do with the pocket chart printables?

We read the book and then laid the strips all around the floor…IMG_8430

We went back and read the book one page at a time and Krash found the matching strip for the pocket chart and put it up…IMG_8433

After they were all up, we read the story in the pocket chart together!IMG_8435

Several times {pencil pointer is from Target $1 section}!IMG_8439

These were very easy to make and he enjoyed the activity a lot. I decided to go ahead and make a couple more sets for other easy readers…

Old, New, Red, Blue is actually a favorite book for Ladybug-to the point that she can almost “read” the entire book herself. I plan to use this set with her!

Pocket Chart Printables Old, New, Red, Blue

I made a set for the book, The Frog and the Fly to go along with our upcoming pond theme!

Pocket Chart Printables The Frog and the Fly

If you have any easy readers you’d like me to look into making sets for, let me know! I forgot how much I loved a pocket chart and we have really been putting ours to good use lately {you can see it in recent Tot School photos}. They do have pocket charts in the $1 section at Target right now, I am not certain of the size. If you have a Target definitely check it out. You could always buy 2 if they aren’t big enough and hang them side by side!

You can download these sets and any others I create here on my website for FREE!
