All Together Learning

Homeschool--89183

We do 3 subjects all together and really enjoy our time with our kids all together {most of the time}.

Daddy teaches Mystery of History which is awesome.  We fnally finished the 1st book and have moved on to book 2. We decided to save ink and use spiral notebooks with the kids and this was a great change!  The love their notebooks and their notes are even better!  Plus – no more printing for me!

History -1063

Below you can see a glimpse of my prep time for book 2.  We use the Timeline Figures from Homeschool in the Woods.  I was printing, cutting and sorting {in baseball card sleeves} for our timeline notebook.

Homeschool -1696

We still love our Heroes of History books.  We are almost done with George Washington. We are still enjoying Liberty’s Kids DVDs, to help deepen our American Revolution knowledge.

You can see our entire World Geography plan here.  Daddy now teaches this too.  They finished all of South America and are well into North America now.  Everyone continues to enjoy this plan. Below is a peek at Daddy writing the notes on our board and that’s a picture of Ladybug’s USA page!

Geography -1892  Geography -1893

1st & 4th Together Learning

Ladybug and Krash do two subjects together and it is working well!  We do Picture Smart Bible {K-3 Old Testament} and US Geography twice a week.

They absolutely love US Geography and I think it’s because they both really love coloring and they love birds.  Seeing the bird for each state is very exciting for them!

USA Geography -1741

We review all the states we have learned each day we do a new one, we use our USA Geography PowerPoint for this.  The PowerPoint show is a favorite and is really great for review.

We have added in a couple more resources to expand our US Geography learning.   The kids absolutely LOVE the awesome USA States song/video by Readeez.

We played Scrambled States for the first time and they really enjoyed it!

USA -0943

We also enjoy playing Sequence States and Capitals together!  If you don’t own this game and are working on states and capitals, I highly recommend it!

    USA Geography -2055

We are enjoying Picture Smart Bible together and have completed Deuteronomy/Joshua.

      #8thGradeWithPacMan[3]

Pac is by far my least photographed child because a majority of his schooling is done independently or with his Dad. I managed to get NO photos of him doing school at all!

He does spend a lot of time doing this, so this picture of him is totally accurate. He’d spend way more hours per day playing the guitar {or his ukelele} if he could!

      8th Grade -2570

He is a pretty easy student and we are thankful.  Sure, we have issues, but overall he does what he is supposed to do. His dad oversees his math, spelling and science completely.  I oversee everything else.  Writing is the only subject I am still teaching directly.

One of my favorite portions of his homeschooling is his reading.  He is currently Reading To Kill a Mockingbird.  His favorites are in bold.

      Here’s his completed list…

All of his other subjects are going well, we are pleased with our choices for him this year.

      4th Grade

      Homeschool -8866  4th Grade Homeschool Curriculum Choices[4]

      #4thGradewithKrash[3]

In order to stay committed to his gymnastics he doubles up on his schoolwork 2 days a week so he can be free to practice the other 3 days. He really works hard on his two intense school days. Below he is working on one of his poems from First Language Lessons.

      4th grade -2062

Science with Dad continues to be a favorite.  He really enjoyed making a volcano, of course!

      4th grade -2064

He continues to do Life of Fred Math with Daddy, at a lower level than his Teaching Textbooks Math {he uses level 5}. We do LOF math to help him work on auditory processing skills.

      4th Grade -1952

We are almost finished reading Mighty Men together, which is a collection of short stories.

He also reads books on his own at night and currently reading The Indian in the Cupboard.

His reading list so far this year…

      #1stGradewithLadybug[3]

She now does the following subjects with her Daddy: science, Growing with Gramar, & Life of Fred Math. I teach her the rest of her subejcts. Below you will see a few highlights from November and December!

      Math

We do a few different things for math and our combination is working beautifully for her.  She continues to LOVE Life of Fred and is finished with book 2 and is enjoying book 3.

Spielgaben is a great fit for her and we do about 2-3 lessons per week, mostly using the worksheets.  See our recent posts here…

      Grammar

Growing with Grammar and First Language Lessons are both wonderful and she enjoys both.  We use both because they are different, yet similar. She now does Growing with Grammar with her Dad so I don’t have any action shots!

Here she is working on her poems from First Language Lessons{she’s using our Poem PowerPoint}.

      1st Grade -0913

      Reading

All About Reading 2 is moving along. She loves the games in the lessons. It is a GREAT fit for her!

      1st Grade -1723

      1st Grade -0922

      Ways we supplement reading development…

We go to the library at least twice a month, sometimes more! Her library books are read daily both independently and aloud!

Before we take books back I ask her to set out her very favorites and I snap a photo and share on Instagram.  These are some recent favorite stacks…

      1st Grade Library -2012

      1st Grade -0950

We finished The Dragons of Blueland, the final book in the series.  She LOVED these books!  We continue to read Little House on the Prairie.

      Writing

She has become quite the independent writer lately.  She loves her word wall folder and her try-it sheets. She uses both daily.

      1st Grade -0930

Whew!  I think that’s it! It takes me forever to write these posts but they are my favorite to look back on!

We do 3 subjects all together and really enjoy our time with our kids all together {most of the time}.

Daddy has begun teaching Mystery of History which is awesome.  We are still finishing the 1st book and will move on to part 2 when we are done. My kids use the notebooking pages, and my daughter colors the coloring page.  Daddy teaches and I write notes on our board to help guide the kids with their note taking.

      World history -9241

We still love our Heroes of History books.  We have extended our learning with the Liberty’s Kids DVDs, to help deepen our American Revolution knowledge, and the kids love it.  My oldest doesn’t sit with us to watch these but the younger 2 love them and learn a lot!  We finished up reading Ben Franklin and really took our time, discussing so many different aspects of history together.  I absolutely love this time with my kids.

      US History -9455

You can see our entire World Geography plan here.  We are LOVING this so far.  We have been focusing on South America and have had fun learning about Brazil, Argentina, Peru, Chile and Venezuela so far.

      World Geography -9091

We have several Little Passports packages that we haven’t opened {I save them for when we study the country}.  I pulled Argentina and we had a blast!  The little 2 loved the dinosaur fossil!

They absolutely love US Geography and I think it’s because they both really love coloring and they love birds.  Seeing the bird for each state is very exciting for them! We have completed states through Georgia and they each have a beautiful notebook for review!

Pac is by far my least photographed child because a majority of his schooling is done independently or with his Dad.  All of my photos of his are usually taken during his science experiments, since that’s the most exciting thing to photograph of an 8th grader’s homeschooling! As you can see, he often has little faces watching him as he works on his experiments.

So far this year he has read more books than he read during the entire year last year!  His favorites are in bold, with Peace Child being the absolute favorite so far.

      Here’s his completed list…

All of his other subjects are going well, we are pleased with our choices for him this year.

      4th Grade

Homeschool -8866  4th Grade Homeschool Curriculum Choices

      #4thGradewithKrash

This young man continues to amaze me with his dedication to his love in life – gymnastics.  He has homeschool practice days that occupy him 3 days of the week, leaving him only 2 full days at home with us.  In order to stay committed to his sport he doubles up on his schoolwork on those 2 days so he can be free to practice the other 3 days. This is not a schedule we ever thought we would have but it is working, thanks to his determination to make it work.

He does have a couple of subjects he does 5 days a week, getting them done in the morning hours before heading to practice.  He is moving along with Teaching Textbooks 5, which is his main 5 day a week subject. He also does history with us in the mornings before practice.

On his intense 2 school days, he works with both Daddy and me.  Daddy teaches him science and Life of Fred math {a supplemental review for him to help work on auditory processing skills}. He is loving science and we are both happy with our choice of Evan Moor for him. Below they were learning about muscles and made an arm model.

      4th Grade -9033 4th Grade -9039

I teach all of his other subjects, below you can see him working on Write Shop D, and First Language Lessons 2. He is using the Poem PowerPoint to work on memorizing his poem, The Goops.

      4th grade -9519 4th grade -9286

Growing with Grammar is a great fit for us.  He does well with the format and is learning a lot.  He has taken 2 tests so far and did very well.

      4th Grade -9043

We are almost done reading our first novel together, Robinson Crusoe.  He loves this book!  We rotate me reading to him, him reading aloud to me, and him reading on his own.

      He also reads books on his own at night and currently really enjoyed 2 books from the I Survived series {The Shark Attacks of 1916 and The Sinking of the Titanic 1912}

I continue to use Lessontrek for her weekly planning and then build her daily work grid from my lesson plan.  She chooses the order of her subjects each day.

        1st Grade -0085

In no particular order, here’s a recap of her past month.  You can see her very first week of 1st grade in our post here.

      Science

We have been enjoying her science together.  On a whim I decided to use an Evan-Moor science book and I love it!  It is simple, and has a project at the end of each chapter.  She particularly loved the shadow picture she made recently! You can see a video of her telling you about her project here!

      1st grade -9574

After reviewing The Curious Kid’s Science Book we decided to add it into our curriculum.  She chooses one project to do with Daddy per week.  Here she was exploring how different liquids reacted with baking soda. Here is a video clip of her working on this project with her Daddy.

      1st Grade -0139

I have been letting her choose an animal to study which has been really fun.  We completed our OWL unit and are now almost done with FROGS.  I will share a full post with all of our frog fun soon!

      1st Grade -9411

      Handwriting

Surprisingly handwriting has become a joy!  She struggled to get the hang of things early on but with the addition of the Handiwriter grip helper, she has now finally corrected her grip and holds her pencil correctly.  She was holding ALL of her fingers on the pencil at one time and I had tried many things.  I ordered this as a last try and it worked!  Within less than 2 weeks of using it, she is grip-corrector free and naturally holds her pencil better!

      1st Grade -8971

We are using Logic of English Cursive.  We begin by introducing each letter in the salt tray, she loves this!

      1st Grade -0105

We use our own handwriting paper now instead of the papers that come with LOE {some we have left over from a friend who gave it to us years ago}. I use a highlighter for her to trace a few samples.

My favorite part is an idea she came up with all on her own!  She makes a little card after we learn each letter by turning the letter into some sort of shape!

I don’t always follow along with what she does in Mathseeds but when she struggles I bring in some hands on help, like these 3D shapes we had!

      1st Grade -8959 1st Grade -9055

Spielgaben rounds out our math resources, and we do about 2-3 lessons per week, mostly using the worksheets.  See our recent posts here…

      Grammar

Growing with Grammar has been a great fit for her and she is breezing through. We do one simple lesson a day and I like the easy workbook approach. There is also a cyclical review included which I also love.  I had a sappy mom moment the day my baby learned subjects and predicates.  Such big words. Such a big girl.

      1st Grade -0029

First Language Lessons is also a great fit for her.  We use both because they are different, yet similar.  Both are very short lessons and I think compliment each other really well.

Here’s a video clip of her reciting her first poem she memorized, The Caterpillar {she’s using our Poem PowerPoint}.

A video posted by Carisa (@1plus1plus1) on

      Reading

All About Reading is a great fit for her and have completed through lesson 14. She is moving along as a reader at a pretty rapid pace now, it’s exciting!

      1st Grade -0208

Here’s a video peek at how we have been making the fluency sheets more fun!  I choose a secret drawing and draw a tiny portion for every word she reads correctly. The drawing grows as she reads and she loves this!

      Ways we supplement reading development…

She has an easy reader Bible that she is reading independently and loving!

We go to the library at least twice a month, sometimes more! Her library books are read daily both independently and aloud!

      1st grade -9584 1st grade -9482

We are reading the My Father’s Dragon series aloud together and she loves it!  We are just starting the 3rd book in the series. Below she is working on a knapsack craft to go along with the book.

Below you can also see her reading aloud to her Daddy.  She reads aloud to one of us almost every day.  She struggled at first reading aloud to Dad since she was only comfortable with me.  We want our kids to be comfortable reading aloud so we encouraged her through her fear and now she reads with him too!

      1st Grade -9153 1st grade -9356

      Spelling

She is breezing through All About Spelling Level 1, we probably should have started this sooner!  She is up to lesson 15 and most of it has been a review for her so far.  I don’t even have any pictures of her working!

      Extras

She is enjoying Home Art Studio and recently completed her weaving project

      Art -9916

We Choose Virtues has been a hit!  We add one virtue per week and focus on discussing the meaning and story as she colors.  We also use the songs {see on my iPad below}. She talks about these a lot and they have really helped her grasp some concepts!

We have a wide grade and age range between our three kids, but I am thrilled to say that we have found quite a few subjects to learn all together!

I have no photos of our together learning time, but we continue to do Mystery of History, YWAM’s Heroes of History – Ben Franklin is almost done, and World Geography together {using Children’s Atlas of God’s World and our printables here}.

Daddy often tag teams the younger two, since he does specific subjects with each of them.  I love seeing him work with our kids!

PacMan is almost entirely independent this year thus making him the least photographed child.

He did a cool lung project with Apologia Science and I happened to snap a photo!

      7th Grade -7439

I bought his 8th grade literature guide already so we got an early start.  I chose Sonlight’s American Historical Literature 130 to use for his reading only.  We will work through these books together and have already begun Peace Child. I didn’t use any sort of guide or program for 7th grade and missed it, which is why I chose to use a more intense literature program next.

I do specific posts for much of Ladybug’s Kindergarten.  Here’s direct links to the posts showing her in action during April {click on the graphic to see the posts}. It has been a much slower month for us.  Honestly I’ve spent more time with the boys helping them finish up knowing I will school with her through the summer.

She also has other Kindergarten fun that we don’t blog specifically about, and I will include in the wrap up posts here!

We are still using our work drawer method. I set up 6 drawers for her, and printed her some new dinosaur labels, which she loves. I made a very simple rotation plan for myself : 1 – AAR, 2 – Literature Unit, 3 – You Can Read {rotate between sight words and word family}, 4 – RLRS, 5 – Daily Literacy Page, 6 – spelling workbook.

      Kindergarten--53874

Daddy is now in charge of box 5 & 6 and has been working on her daily literacy paper and spelling workbook with her. She isn’t always thrilled but he does an awesome job and I am so thankful he is playing a part in her homeschooling!

We are moving right along with All About Reading Level 1 and she still LOVES it.   She recently completed the 2nd book and is well through the third now!

Reading is a favorite hobby of hers and that makes my heart happy {my boys weren’t like this}. She loves for me to collect a random stack of books and surprise her on my bed.  She sits there and reads through them all!  We also finally went to the library for the first time since we moved, and now have a library books only area which she loves!

      All Together School

We have a wide grade and age range between our three kids, but I am thrilled to say that we have found quite a few subjects to learn all together!

We do the following subjects all together, and I will share mini updates below!

      Mystery of History

Our Mystery of History time together continues to be a favorite of mine.  We do lessons 3 days a week, and then work on our timeline and review on the 4th day.

At the end of February we had completed through week 17, lesson 51.  I just love this time of learning with my kids!

      U.S. History ~ William Penn

We use YWAM’s Heroes of History as our U.S. History foundation. It is novel based and a perfect fit for us.  We finished John Smith and are almost done with William Penn now.  We all have loved this book, lots to learn about this amazing man of such integrity!

We read together 3 times per week at least, and the kids all get to play with something quietly while we read.

      Homeschool -3858

Sometimes I find some interesting shots on my phone when we are done.  My kids will sometimes play with my hair while reading.  Apparently this day my oldest had a little too much fun.

Daddy continues to be in charge of overseeing Pac’s science {Apologia General Science}! I caught them one day learning together. They were both obviously so very thrilled with me.

He is doing really well with Teaching Textbooks Pre Algebra. Daddy oversees this too and helps when needed.

We are really enjoying reading The Hiding Place together, I don’t normally read aloud to him but I love this book so we are reading together this time!

All About Spelling continues to work really well for him.  We are well into level 3, and he is really absorbing the rules. Below you can see him working on a page from the Homophones workbook.  We pull these out whenever they show up in the lessons.

He is reading a book he is really enjoying now, The Wright Brothers.  I just love when he gets into a good book.  It is hard to find ones that really lure him in, and thankfully this one did!

We continue with Write Shop D for writing and it is going well.  Still not my favorite thing to teach but we are moving along. The hands on lessons are our favorites, but he still struggles when it comes time to write.  Not his favorite thing.  Although if you give him a blank notebook and no rules, he will write his own chapter book!

We are almost through First Language Lessons {starting with book 1 and moving quickly} to work on oral comprehension and solid grammar skills.  In addition to this he is using Growing with Grammar 2 which I am loving. I like to do both with him since one is auditory and one is a written workbook style. Below he is working on Growing with Grammar.

She also has other Kindergarten fun that we don’t blog specifically about, and I will include in the wrap up posts here!

Recently I bought the Daily Literacy pack from one of my favorite TPT sellers, Lavinia Pop.  I just love her work and whenever I want something in my head but don’t want to create it myself, I check her store.  I had been wanting to create daily literacy work for years and finally figured it was too late for me to make my own and I just loved hers, so I bought it! Ladybug does one page a day {most days} and it reviews handwriting, letter ID, sight words, CVC words, and beginning sounds.

I’ve gotten some questions recently, since my Instagram has been showing Ladybug using All About Reading Level 1. I did not give up Logic of English Foundations A to switch to AAR, we are using both.  It’s complicated, I know.  But you see, I was given AAR to review back when Krash was younger, and we loved it.  Then this past fall I was given LOE to review and decided to use it with Ladybug, and we loved it.  So I used LOE up until I felt she had a solid phonics base {all letter sounds, how to blend CVC words, identify beginning/middle/end sound} and then we put LOE away and started AAR 1.  We still have ten more LOE lessons left and we will do these during AAR 1.  The last ten lessons of LOE pull in consonant blends, and when AAR gets to that point we will tie the two together.

      Kindergarten -4884

With Krash I began AAR 1 a little too early and he struggled in the beginning and we had to slow down a lot.  With Ladybug it was perfect timing and she is soaring! The foundation she got from LOE was awesome.  So, I know the big question is, “"which one do I like better?”  The answer is both!  If money wasn’t a struggle for someone,  I would recommend using AAR Pre, then LOE Foundations A, then AAR 1. They are both amazing programs, based on similar thinking in regards to teaching literacy. You really can’t go wrong with either one of these programs.

So, for now we are using AAR every day, she begs for lessons.  At the end of February we had completed through lesson 10.

Anyone who has used AAR knows the fluency pages are a struggle for some kids.  I had this struggle with Krash and after the first day of struggle with her, I decided to make it the best time of the reading lesson and pull out the fruit snacks.  I am not a big fan of rewards of food during school and rarely do this, but in some cases I do and this is one of them.  She gets a snack anyway when we are done, so we just use the snack to make it more fun! She collects her snack one section at a time. Here’s more ideas for making the AAR fluency pages more fun!

I love, LOVE the All About Reading readers.  They are beautifully illustrated, simple and fun.

I still use Lessontrek for all of our weekly lesson plans.  It’s so simple and I love it.  For Ladybug, I have general subject areas and then add in what we actually did each day in pencil on the sheet.  I have a very loose plan for Kindergarten and this method works well for us. {use code OPO3 for 3 months free to try Lessontrek yourself!}.

Lately she has been reading on my bed a lot.  I give her a stack of books and often she will be there for an hour or longer! Lately she has loved getting a stack of AlphaTales books, Brand New Readers, Bob Books, and Scholastic Folk & Fairy Tales.

      January 2015 Homeschool Wrap Up

Now that we are mostly settled into our new house, I wanted to get back on the monthly homeschool wrap-up wagon! This post will share our learning that happened during January.  We are in the middle of my son’s competitive gymnastics season so we take some days off here and there and then make them up when the season is over.  We didn’t have a full four weeks of school, but close!

You can see our detailed curriculum posts by clicking on the graphics below.

This is our group shot from the beginning of the year, they’ve already changed SO much! Especially my biggest boy!

      Homeschool-Portraits--9892

We have a wide grade and age range between our three kids, but I am thrilled to say that we have found quite a few subjects to learn all together!

We do the following subjects all together, and I will share mini updates below!

      Mystery of History

Our Mystery of History time together continues to be a favorite of mine.  We do lessons 3 days a week, and then work on our timeline and review on the 4th day.

At the end of January we had completed through week 13, lesson 39.  We obviously got behind this year and will get as far as we can and continue on with volume 1 next year if needed and then move on to volume 2.

One of the highlights of the month was watching corresponding What’s in the Bible DVDs as we went through certain lessons! The kids LOVED this and it helped so much!

      Monthly Wrap Up -3770

Specific lessons we matched with videos recently ~

      Volume 5 ~ Israel Gets a King went nicely with MOH Week 11 {David, Solomon, Saul}

      Volume 6 ~ A Nation Divided matched up with MOH lesson 35 {The Kingdom of Israel Divides}

As I went to get links for this post I noticed they have an incredible sale going on for the DVDs right now {ends 2/15/15}!

      U.S. History ~ William Penn

We use YWAM’s Heroes of History as our U.S. History foundation. It is novel based and a perfect fit for us.  We finished John Smith and are in the middle of William Penn now.  We are all loving this particular book since we lived in Pennsylvania for the past 10 years before moving!  This is a GREAT book.

We read together 3 times per week at least, and the kids all get to play with something quietly while we read.

Even the dog often joins us for reading time.

      World Geography

We continue to use the book Passport to the World to go through countries and languages from around the world.  Such a simple thing we do twice a week but we are all learning and remembering so much!  The book is a launch for many discussions. We are almost done with the entire book and will move onto Children’s Atlas of God’s World next to do the same thing ~ just read and learn together!

PacMan is almost entirely independent this year.  I teach him writing and Who is God? and the rest he does independently.

Daddy continues to be in charge of overseeing Pac’s science {Apologia General Science}! This is so great for me {the mom who dislikes teaching science}. Pac continues to set up, and clean up his experiments on his own, it is wonderful!  He even invites his sister to sit in when he can!

We continue to slowly creep along with writing {Write Shop 1} in the afternoon together, and it continues to be a struggle.  I just don’t like teaching writing.  Love the curriculum, it’s just me.

He is doing really well with Teaching Textbooks Pre Algebra. Daddy oversees this too and helps when needed.

We have been bad with reading lately and he just picked up his first novel since we moved, he is currently reading The Hiding Place.

Krash spends a lot of time in the gym, and his gymnastics team has many homeschooled kids.  There are homeschool gym hours 3 days per week so we get a majority of his schooling done on his two non-gym days each week.  He also schools with us on the other three days, but his most intense days are Tuesday and Thursday here at home.

Daddy has taken over a few subjects with Krash since our move ~ Life of Fred Math {they are working on book C right now}, Vocabulary, Science, and math. He is doing well with Teaching Textbooks Math 4, but we have made one change for him.  Daddy now goes over the lesson in the textbook with K each morning before he goes to the computer.  He needs this extra walk through most morning just to clear his brain and help him focus.

We continue with Write Shop D for writing and it is going well.  Still not my favorite thing to teach but we are moving along.

We are almost through First Language Lessons {starting with book 1 and moving quickly} to work on oral comprehension and solid grammar skills.  In addition to this he is using Growing with Grammar 2 which I am loving. I like to do both with him since one is auditory and one is a written workbook style.

All About Spelling continues to work really well for him.  We are well into level 3, and he is really absorbing the rules. A recent change we made was putting the board on our table instead of propped up.  he likes this SO much better!

Krash has been joining in with Ladybug for calendar time for some review. He is a good helper to her.  He has a modified Calendar Notebook again, and is working on a few simple things each day.  I plan to write a post soon sharing exactly what he and Ladybug are doing with calendar these days!

We continue to use and enjoy Logic of English Foundations A. Her progress is just where I want it to be.  She calls it “dragon school” because of the dragon on the front of the book.  She enjoys the lessons and does really well. It has been a fabulous foundation in phonics for her.

A new aspect of our homeschool is read aloud time with Daddy each afternoon.  Since my husband is now home more, he reads her a stack of books each day after lunch.  They both love this time and I feel so blessed to have him home able to do this!
