Counting is for the Birds Literature Unit in Action

We are loving our Kindergarten Literature Units,  and recently completed Counting is for the Birds!Counting is for the Birds Unit Study in Action

I love setting up a central area for our theme focus and my daughter loves it too.  I gather our toys and books together and display them the night before we begin our unit. It helps to draw her in and get her excited about our learning time together. This was a VERY easy unit to set up for since my kids are obsessed with birds, and I once was and had a lot from my teaching days!

Ladybug just had her 6th birthday and got the cute little bird feeder swing and all of those stuffed birds, the small bird toob birds, and the singing birds.  They came at the perfect time to set up for this unit!

Our next Kindergarten Literature Unit Study Printable Pack is ready, Counting is for the Birds by Frank Mazzola Jr.!  We are technically closer to 1st grade now so I adapted this set to her needs.  It would be a better pack for later in the Kindergarten year for most children.

Counting is for the Birds is a favorite book of Ladybug’s, featuring another of her favorites ~ BIRDS!  It features many of her very favorite birds, lots that we find on our own feeders! You can get the book here!

In this printable unit you will find a sample lesson plan.  I provide a lesson plan idea, but even I probably won’t follow this, it is just an idea.  Make this work for you and your child!

The Dog Who Had Kittens ~ Kindergarten Literature Unit in Action

We completed another Kindergarten Literature Unit, The Dog Who Had Kittens!

The Dog Who Had Kittens Kindergarten Literature Unit Study In Action

I love setting up a central area for our theme focus and my daughter loves it too.  I gather our toys and books together and display them the night before we begin our unit. It helps to draw her in and get her excited about our learning time together. It was VERY simple this time and she helped me create it.  She has tons of dog and cat stuffed animals so I had her choose which ones she thought looked most like Eloise, Baxter and the kittens from the book.

The Dog Who Had Kittens -5036

We also let many other doggies and kitties come along, as well as our collection of cat and dog books.  This is a shot of our “extras” basket.

The Dog Who Had Kittens -5045

Instead of sorting in folders for each day, I put together a binder.  I put the activities in the order I wanted her to do them, but we went out of order on some!

The Dog Who Had Kittens -4863

Day One

We began by reading the book, which is a big time favorite!  We then went on to our first activity, sorting baby and adult animals.

We then made patterns using images of kittens, Eloise and Baxter…

Finally, we worked on “D is for…

Day Two

We began with, the graphing dogs.  She loved this!!

The Dog Who Had Kittens -4890

We did the character connection about being grateful, but no photos!

Then she did the story problems, but I also didn’t get a photo of her! She loved this, she is very into math right now.

Story Problems

Finally we used the “Describe a Basset Hound” page and had lots of laughs together.  During this we also searched online for other pictures of Basset Hounds and she decided she NEEEEDS a “Basket” Hound because they are soooooo cuuuute.

The Dog Who Had Kittens -4898

Day Three

She painted a cat and dog in honor of Baxter and Eloise.

The Dog Who Had Kittens -4932

Day Four

She cut out and put together the dog and cat she painted the day before..

The Dog Who Had Kittens -4938

We then sequenced the story together…

Finally, we found sight words in the book…

Day Five

She loved the simple “What did Baxter do?” activity focusing on days of the week.

The Dog Who Had Kittens -5009

We then did the comprehension questions

Finally she traced as we discussed the Bible verse and how Eloise was thankful to Baxter in the end of the story.

A Color of His Own Kindergarten Literature Unit In Action

We completed another Kindergarten Literature Unit, A Color of His Own, recently. It was SO nice to be back to learning this way, we both love it.  We haven’t done a literature unit since before my husband’s accident over three months ago!

A Color of His Own Unit Study in Action

I love setting up a central area for our theme focus and my daughter loves it too.  I gather our toys and books together and display them the night before we begin our unit. It helps to draw her in and get her excited about our learning time together. I usually borrow books from the library but didn’t have time to get there so we used the only two chameleon books we had.

We also didn’t have any actual chameleon toys, so since they are a part of the lizard family we invited all of her lizards to join us! She is a BIG lizard fan so this was very exciting for her!

A Color of His Own Lit Unit -4813

Instead of sorting in folders for each day, I put together a binder.

A Color of His Own Lit Unit -4305

I put the activities in the order I wanted to do them and we just did what we wanted to do each day.  I didn’t stress out over how many activities we got done, we just did whatever worked. you’ll see below we finished the unit after a total of 7 different days working together.

A Color of His Own Lit Unit -4308

This was a REALLY fun unit, we both loved it!

Day One

We began by reading the book, which is a favorite so she enjoyed reading.  We then went on to our first activity, sorting plants and animals from the story.

A Color of His Own Lit Unit -4310

A Color of His Own Lit Unit -4313

A Color of His Own Lit Unit -4318

Next we did the “What Begins with C?” activity.  She loves to cut and decorate so this took awhile!

A Color of His Own Lit Unit -4315

That was it for day one, she took so long on those two activities, we ran out of time.  I sued to get stressed and would rush my kids.  Now I just try to relax and let them take their time.  We just add days to the unit if needed!

Day Two

Again, we read the book. This time we discussed the friend the chameleon made near the end.  We then did the character connection talking about being a good friend.

A Color of His Own Lit unit -4333

A Color of His Own Lit unit -4335

She then put the story in order in our pocket chart!

A Color of His Own Lit unit -4338

Next we read the mini book and used a toy lemon and “chameleon” to practice our position words!

A Color of His Own Lit unit -4343

Day Three

To begin day 3, we watched some videos online about chameleons.  All that we watched are pinned on my Pinterest board for this unit here. She LOVED this!

A Color of His Own Lit Unit -4606

She then worked on the 1-30 math activity.

A Color of His Own Lit Unit -4610

Next, we sorted chameleons, which turned into a very long activity!

A Color of His Own Lit Unit -4619

We sorted them many different ways and also each lined them up in order from our favorite to least favorite!

A Color of His Own Lit Unit -4626

Then she asked if she could cut them out and make a scene for them.  Of course!

A Color of His Own Lit Unit -4627

That’s me {the stick person} with my big finger holding a chameleon! Winking smile

A Color of His Own Lit Unit -4635

Day Four

This day we only did one activity, the labeling project.  She really enjoyed this one too.

A Color of My Own Lit Unit -4685

Day Five

Coloring the chameleon was quite the activity!  She asked to laminate her new friend so she could keep him.’

A Color of His Own Lit Unit -4702

She also did the painting for the chameleon craft!

A Color of His Own Lit Unit -4719

Day 6

The chameleon dried overnight and the next day she put her together!

A Color of His Own Lit Unit -4753

She also worked on the color/shape activity!

A Color of His Own Lit Unit -4755  A Color of His Own Lit Unit -4757

Day 7

On our final day we finished everything else up!  First, we did the number line activity!

A Color of His Own Lit Unit -4768

She wanted to make it trickier and cover two numbers.  We closed our eyes and took turns covering as the other one guessed the missing numbers.

A Color of His Own Lit Unit -4769

We then used the Bible verse printable and discussed how wonderful the chameleon is!

A Color of His Own Lit Unit -4770

Comprehension questions were fun!  We folded them up in a little bucket and she chose one at a time to answer!

A Color of His Own Lit Unit -4786

A Color of His Own Lit Unit -4785

Finally, she wrote a sentence about the chameleon.  She wrote, “This is my pet chameleon.”

A Color of His Own Lit Unit -4793

She really learned a lot and the other book we used, Chameleons are Cool actually taught us the most. I caught her several times enjoying the books during the unit.
