2nd Grade Year-End Review of Homeschool Curriculum Choices

2nd Grade Homeschool Curriculum Year End Wrap Up

The homeschool curriculum choices blog posts are great, but what I really want to know is what families thought AFTER they used the curriculum they chose! I will be sharing a series of posts with you; evaluating our choices in each grade level from this homeschool year.

First up, 2nd grade!  Here’s a reminder of the original 2nd Grade Curriculum Choices post.

2nd Grade Subjects

Below I will give a small review of each subject, if you have more specific questions about anything, just leave me a comment and I will do my best to answer!

Math ~ Teaching Textbooks 3, Life of Fred, Spielgaben

Teaching Textbooks 3 was her main math curriculum and it was a perfect fit for her. I highly recommend starting with TT from the beginning, which is usually 2nd or 3rd grade. She will be moving onto TT 4 next year for 3rd grade!

We loved using Spielgaben to supplement our math lessons and will definitely continue with this. Spielgaben was particularly helpful in bringing a hands-on aspect to some of the more difficult concepts.

We LOVE Life of Fred but sadly we let it slip away. I hope to get back to reading the books to her next year.

Reading Loads of Books and Reading Comprehension 2nd Grade

She read SO many books this year! I tried to keep up with all of them here but after about 80 books I lost track. She is definitely my bookworm. I just step in to try to balance her choices with a few of my choices!

This reading comprehension workbook was a great fit for her and she enjoyed it. I bought her the next level for the upcoming school year!

2nd Grade Reading Comprehension

Grammar ~ First Language Lessons Level 2 & Growing with Grammar 2

I continue to love this combo for grammar! We will be using Growing with Grammar Level 3 in the fall, and we are done with First Language Lessons! We don’t use level 3-4 of FLL, only 1 & 2. We will be adding Grammar Galaxy in the fall as well!

2nd Grade Growing with Grammar

Spelling ~ All About Spelling Level 2

All About Spelling continues to be a good fit for my kids and we will be moving on to level 3 in the fall!

2nd Grade All About Spelling 2

Geography ~ Evan-Moor Beginning Geography

I picked this book up at a homeschool convention and am so glad I did! It was just perfect for her!

2nd Grade Geography

Science ~ Apologia Swimming Creatures {with Krash, 5th grade}

Daddy taught this to the younger kids together and they loved it! They technically aren’t done with the entire book but will be doing some lessons this summer to finish!

 Science -8182 Science -6407

History ~ The Mystery of History 2

Daddy also teaches history and while it isn’t the favorite of the kids, we love it!

History -8217

Art  ~ Home Art Studio 2nd Grade and Holiday Arts & Crafts

She LOVES art. I do not. We do much more art in the summer than we do during the school year. We will be continuing with Home Art Studio and also enrolling her in some local art classes if possible!

Home Art Studio Project -9569 Home Art Studio -14-42nd grade -7068

Drop out Subjects ~ Handwriting, Bible

I had grand plans of reviewing cursive handwriting {which she formally learned last year}, but got slack and never followed through. I also had planned to do Picture Smart Bible with K and L together and also didn’t follow through. It was much harder this year to combine L and K because of K’s gymnastics schedule.

Stay tuned, I will be sharing our year-end review for 5th and 9th soon. I will also be sharing our curriculum choices for 9th grade, 6th grade and 3rd grade.

Home Art Studio Project ~ Humpty Dumpty

Home Art Studio 2nd Grade

We have been using Home Art Studio for a long time now. You can see all of the projects I have blogged about here! Home Art Studio sent us curriculum to review years ago and I bought the 2nd Grade DVD to use with my daughter this year.

Recently she completed the Humpty Dumpty project and loved it! First, she watched Ms. Volin read a story and then explain how to do the art project.

She likes to change things up a bit and make it her own, which I love. She opted to make more of a stained glass window without the egg shape in the middle. The blue mat under her is something we use a lot!

She learned a cool technique in the video, using salt on watercolor paint! She loved the effect!

Later that night the paint had dried and she removed the tape!

Exploring Division with Spielgaben

Exploring Division with Spielgaben

{We were given the Spielgaben set to review and are honored to have them as a blog sponsor.}

We have had our Spielgaben set for years now and have grown with it. This year for 2nd grade, we are using Spielgaben as an extension of our math curriculum.

Recently she saw a division symbol while we were playing a game and told me she didn’t know how to do that. Her comment led me to choose to explore division in a hands on way with her before she even gets to it in her main math curriculum! I am so glad we did this, she caught on quickly and loved it!

I chose an activity from Math Guide 2, called “Sharing Chocolate Chip Cookies,” it’s Play 17 on page 58 if you have the guide. We used the small dots instead of the semi circles.

Spielgaben Math Guide 2 p 58

We followed the lesson almost exactly, except that I added in sticky notes to sow her the concept on paper as we worked with the pieces. You can see my drawings on this one, which illustrates the vocabulary I taught her as we learned. Four cookies, divided between two people, means that each person gets two cookies!

Spielgaben -3533

We went on by adding more people, and also by using different numbers of cookies to illustrate many different division problems.

Spielgaben -3540

After modeling several times, I gave her a problem and had her write the division problem for it. This was a great moment when she realized she could do it!

Finally, I showed her the fascinating fact that division is the opposite of multiplication! She was amazed! This was a fabulous lesson and I am thankful to have Spielgaben in our life so I am more intentional with doing fun lessons like this in addition to her regular math curriculum!

Zoey and Sassafras Book Review and Printables

Zoey and Sassafras -

{disclaimer ~ we were sent these books to review and affiliate links are used in this post}

Oh my word. I can’t say enough about Zoey and Sassafras!. When my blog friend Asia asked if I would like to review her new chapter book series, I took a look, saw a dragon and a cat and said YES! I figured with two of my daughter’s VERY favorites on the cover, it was likely she would enjoy them. Plus she LOVES to read. The photo above shows moments after she opened the package that Asia sent us with the first book, her smile says it all.

She sat down to read it after we came inside from playing that day and she finished it all at once!

Zoey and Sassafras --2

I just happened to be sitting near her as I noticed her on the last page so I started filming so I could get her live and authentic reaction. I’ll let the video speak for itself.

About the Series…

Zoey is a smart and sweet little girl with an adorable pet cat, Sassafras. Science, adventure and fantasy are woven together in the delightful tales. The books are funny, educational, and just simply enjoyable. I HIGHLY recommend them!

There are 3 books in the series {we are really hoping Asia will write more}, and they all feature larger font size, and black and white illustrations on many pages. The books are written at a 2nd grade independent reading level, but would make a great read aloud for a younger child. Honestly the stories are so well written that older kids will enjoy them too. The recommended age is 4-10, my daughter is almost 8 and these are perfect!

The Printables…

She also loves to color and asked me if I had any Zoey and Sassafras coloring pages! Thankfully we were given permission from the fabulous illustrator, Marion Lindsay, to use her images to create some printables! I first put together some simple coloring pages for her, which she also used as tracing sheets. She loves to practice her drawing skills.

She is in 2nd grade, and I wanted to create a couple of activities to work on some skills also. First, I made a sheet for her to draw and write about her own magical animal. She loved this and I just love her creativity. After this she asked me if she could use one of her small notebooks to be her magical animal book. She has since written about several made-up magical animals all on her own!

Zoey and Sassafras -3517

I also created a printable activity to work on some grammar skills. We came up with verbs and adjectives to describe Zoey and Sassafras!

Zoey and Sassafras -3530

The words she chose to describe Zoey give a good picture into the type of main character this little girl is ~ creative, smart, and helpful. All traits I love to see in my own kids! Zoey likes to ~ investigate, explore, and play!

Zoey and Sassafras -3531

She is BEGGING Asia to write more books, but she said she will reread these for now, she loves them so much!

Exploring Area with Spielgaben

Exploring Area with Spielgaben

{We were given the Spielgaben set to review and are honored to have them as a blog sponsor.}

We have had our Spielgaben set for years now and have grown with it. This year for 2nd grade, we are using Spielgaben as an extension of our math curriculum.

She has been learning all about area with her core math curriculum so I went through the Spielgaben math guide and searched for activities to reinforce this concept. Adding in hands-on pieces really helps a lot and is one of the main reasons I continue to supplement her math.

First, we did an activity outlined in the Spielgaben Math Guide #2. She created fences for the “yards” I created out of cuboids.

Spielgaben (1 of 7)

Then, we used the fence pieces to figure the area and write the multiplication problem.

Spielgaben (2 of 7)

Next we played a game I made up, which I called “Which bedroom do you want?” I pre-measured and cut 3 different shapes and showed them to her. She guessed which had the biggest area and chose that room for herself, then gave each of her brothers the other rooms. Then we got to work figuring the area of each room!

Spielgaben (3 of 7)

Surprisingly she thought the long rectangle room was bigger, but the square one was bigger! She chose the biggest correctly! I had her tell me what the multiplication problems were for the area of each room and write them.

Spielgaben (4 of 7)

As usual, she asked to play freely when we were done! I am a BIG fan of this and encourage her to play! She made an alligator!

Spielgaben (6 of 7)

Then she asked me to tape it together so she could play with it. I told her to give it a try, and she did! She worked for so long getting the tape pieces just right nd was so happy {as you can see} when it was done!
