You Can Read Sight Words ~ Unit 2

You Can Read Sight Words Unit 2

We slowed down with You Can Read while we enjoyed a total school break and some vacation time!  We spread this unit out over a few weeks, only working on days she asked me to.  She learned these 4 words so quickly! Along with adding these new words, we also reviewed the previous 4 words.  She is really doing well, it seems I hit the sweet spot of her being ready to read, I am glad I waited!

Here’s a post sharing You Can Read Sight Words Unit Two with Krash when he did it!  See all of Krash’s Kindergarten posts here.

Unit Organization

You can see how we store ALL of our You Can Read stuff here.  For current units I use thisYou-Can-Read--7714_thumb1 metal file container {Target} and hanging folders.  The pink ones are You Can Read units, the yellow are her Kindergarten Literature Unit Study Printables {which we are not using during the summer but will pick back up again in August}.  I have a daily lesson plan for both in a sheet protector in the front.  The You Can Read printable lesson plan is here.

I have been asked a lot how we do things so I am trying to outline it for you as much as possible, there’s even a couple of video clips!  I am not sure if I will blog all the way through You Can Read like this, but if it is helpful, I might, let me know! Below you will see exactly what we did on each day and how I spread it out.

Day One

Here’s a before shot showing what we did together on the first day with unit two.  We focused a LOT on the sight word caterpillar and instead of hanging him on a wall we are using our pocket chart so we can take the circles down and use them during the lessons.

After I taught her her the words, she built them…

Then a very creative color by number sight word!  And she was gladly using her pom pom pencil grip correction, we are still working on getting the grip better even with the pom pom helper.

Finally, tracing to connect words, I was shocked, she read them all without hesitating!  Learned this set way faster than the first set of words.

Day Five

I set up a few activities for her and she chose what to do first.

I set up two word play areas, one here with our magnetic letter construction kit, which she was totally UNimpressed by and didn’t even touch, except to redesign my words into a family.

She loved this one, I made the words using our caterpillar word circles and some of our Spielgaben pieces.  She didn’t want to recreate the words, but loved reading them to me.

She learned these words so quickly, I didn’t even do all of the activities with her.  It was time to move on! I will adjust each week based on how quickly she masters the words.  With You Can Read I don’t move on without mastery, or very close to it.  If she doesn’t know them we just keep playing with them until she does, that’s why I provide TONS of activities to choose from to take the units as far as you might need to!

A Color of His Own Kindergarten Literature Unit Printables

A Color of His Own Kindergarten Literature Unit Printables

Our next Kindergarten Literature Unit Study Printable Pack is ready!  I continue to develop behind the scenes and am excited to share our next unit with you.

A few have asked if I am going in the order the books are listed here on the blog, and the answer is NO.  I am going in random order and that list is not set in stone.  On the website here, at the bottom, I will share the next 2 books I am working on so you’ll have a bit of notice in case you need it.

A Color of His Own is a favorite book of Ladybug’s.  This is a popular book I am sure many of you are familiar with. Ladybug really likes chameleons and other reptiles, which is why I think she really enjoys this story.  I expanded on many aspects of the story for the printables, hope you enjoy them!

In this printable unit you will find a sample lesson plan.  I provide a lesson plan idea, but even I probably won’t follow this, it is just an idea.  Make this work for you and your child!

A Color of His Own Lesson Plan

For each unit, I am selecting Kindergarten math goals from our list. For this unit I chose counting 1-30 {with some tracing}, working with a number line, positional words, and shape identification.

Our next Kindergarten Literature Unit Study Printable Pack is ready!  I have been busy developing behind the scenes and am excited to share our next unit with you.

The Selfish Crocodile is a favorite book of Ladybug’s.  This is a longer book with a great storyline about treating others nicely.  In the beginning the crocodile is selfish and grouchy but then a little mouse helps him and in the end he is friendly with the other animals.  I love this one as much as she does!

In this printable unit you will find a sample lesson plan.  I provide a lesson plan idea, but even I probably won’t follow this, it is just an idea.  Make this work for you and your child!

You Can Read Sight Words Unit 1

You Can Read Sight Words ~ Unit 1

Ladybug started You Can Read Sight Words! She hasn’t been interested in learning to read, but recently that interest spiked and thankfully I had all of my You Can Read stuff organized and we pulled it out and got busy! She is currently 5 years, 1 month old.

Here’s a post sharing You Can Read Unit One with Krash when he did it!

Unit Organization

You can see how we store ALL of our You Can Read stuff here.  For current units I use this metal file container {Target}  and hanging folders.  The pink ones are You Can Read units, the yellow are her Kindergarten Literature Unit Study Printables.  I have a daily lesson plan for both in a sheet protector in the front.  The You Can Read printable lesson plan is here.

You Can Read -7714

We won’t necessarily always get a unit done in 5 days, sometimes it will be more.  I do have the activities divided out into 5 days but then shift things around as needed.  It gives me a starting point to grab from each day.

You Can Read -7717

She was thrilled to begin and had just recently shown an interest in learning how to read.  Before then she displayed all of the reading readiness skills except the desire to learn!  Now she has the desire and we are rolling!

During this same time period we did our Hi! Pizza Man unit also, working with that in the morning and this in the afternoon.

This is a LONG post, and it’s meant to be, hopefully to help those of you who want massive details!

Day One

Here’s a before shot showing what we did together on her very first day using You Can Read.  We focused a LOT on the sight word caterpillar and instead of hanging him on a wall we are using our pocket chart so we can take the circles down and use them during the lesson.

You Can Read Unit 1 -7756

I introduced the words to her and had her repeat after me, using the caterpillar.  Then we went to trace the shapes, in the dry erase center.  She enjoyed this a lot!

You Can Read Unit 1 -7765

Next, we made the words using the cut out letters.  I pulled the word she was working on down from the caterpillar so she could copy it.

You Can Read Unit 1 -7767

We read her very first easy reader together and then she read it to me {was sitting in my lap for that so no picture}.  Then I got the word circles and asked her if she could find the words in the book!  She is reading Farm Friends from the Scholastic First Little Readers set.

You Can Read Unit 1 -7772

Her first color by number sight word!  And she was gladly using her pom pom pencil grip correction!

You Can Read Unit 1 -7780

She ASKED if she could write a sentence using her new words.  Why YES sweetheart, you sure can!!!  She was so excited to know how to spell the new words and so proud of the word she already knew {CAT}. Here’s her first invented spelling story.

You Can Read Unit 1 -7783

Here’s the translated version of her story.  She said, “Look at the cat hanging from the letters!”

Invented Spelling Kindergarten

Day Two

Here is the before shot for day 2.  We are doing You Can Read activities in the afternoon and do our Kindergarten Literature Unit activities in the morning.

You Can Read -7844

She went straight for the puzzles!

You Can Read -7846

We read the easy reader book next {in my lap of course}.  The book I chose is School, from a very old Scholastic set we have.

After reading together she wanted to trace.

You Can Read -7847

She loved the stamping!

You Can Read -7850

So proud of her for being willing to use her pom pom pencil grip corrector, it continues to help so much!

You Can Read -7854

I am SO excited about the new addition to the You Can Read program! I have added all of the You Can Read units plus review units to Bitsboard so our children can play games with the words on the iPad. In Bitsboard she can choose which games she wants to play with her words.  She chose Photo Touch {the word cards are considered “photos”}, Word Builder, and True or False which are all three shown in the photos below.

You Can Read -7855  You Can Read -7857

You Can Read -7859

I will be writing up a tutorial soon, but if you already know how to use Bitsboard, you’ll be able to find the You Can Read boards on your own and use them too! I’m almost positive this app is only available in the Apple market and not Android, unless my searching was not showing me something, I am sorry for those of you who use Android. If you install Bitsboard to your iPad/iPhone, use the search feature and search “You Can Read,” and our boards will show up for you to download.

Day Three

You Can Read -8005

This was down below, I used the magnetic letter construction kit to make her words for her.  Within minutes she had turned them into cats.

Day Four

{this is the 2nd week, we did 3 days the first week}

We worked with this unit for 2 weeks.  I only set up two activities for her this day, since I knew the sensory bin word search takes awhile!

She loved this as much as Krash did.

Day Six

{this was week 3, since we traveled over the end of week 2}

For our final day, I wanted to be sure she knew these words before moving on.

You Can Read -8224

I set up a matching game {using her color by number cards and her brother’s since I still had those too!  She asked to play twice and really liked this.

You Can Read -8233

Roll and graph the sight words was also a popular choice.  It took a bit longer than usual since she drew a picture in every single square and had a story to tell me {see more on Instagram here}.  Oh, homeschooling a girl is so different!

You Can Read -8236

Here’s a video clip of this activity

She colored Color by Word picture but I didn’t get an action shot. You can see it below in the completed work display {items used in the dry erase center aren’t up here, only consumables}! I am happy to say she knows all of her words and has been finding them in books we are reading and in other places! My Kindergarten teacher heart is overflowing!

“Hi! Pizza Man” Kindergarten Literature Unit in Action

Hi Pizza Man Kindergarten Literature Unit Study in Action

Recently we shared about our new  Kindergarten Literature Units and our first set of printables for “Hi! Pizza Man!” We completed this unit in our home and today we want to share our fun with you!  This unit ended up being more fun than I realized it would be, she absolutely loved it!  I am so thankful God led my heart in this direction for her! Our Hi! Pizza Man Kindergarten Literature Unit was a blast!

I love setting up a central area for our theme focus and my daughter loves it too.  I gather our toys and books together and display them the night before we begin our unit. It helps to draw her in and get her excited about our learning time together. I borrow books from the library and also toys from friends to enrich our learning. I gather toys from around the house too {well, actually I send my older boys on a hunt to find things for me}.  You can see some suggestions for what to gather, borrow or buy for this unit here!

The full set-up…

Hi Pizza Man Day -7707

Hi Pizza Man Day -7709

Hi Pizza Man Day -7711

I divided up our activities into 5 hanging folders, they are behind our You Can Read unit in this basket. I follow a very loose lesson plan and shift things around as needed or desired. I do not stress out at all about what does or does not get done each day.  We just have fun together and learn as we go!

You Can Read -7717

I tried something new by taking small video clips for you throughout our unit.  Let me know if these are helpful to you.  After speaking and meeting readers at the Teach Them Diligently Conventions I began thinking of more ways I could help people and videos came to my mind.

We spread this unit over 2 1/2 weeks, for 6 days total.  We are in a lighter school mode right now so I was in no rush. I divided this post into days so you could see what we did on each day.

Day One

The set up drew her right in and she loved it!  She was playing and reading her books within seconds!

Hi Pizza Man Day -7721

After I let her explore on her own for awhile, we read the book together.  We pulled out the animals we have and added them to the story!

Hi Pizza Man Day -7725

We worked on the 3 part animal cards next, in our small pocket chart!

Pizza patterns were a hit, she is very into patterns right now!

She loved the pizza sticker book I got for her.  One side is hers and one is mine.  Can you guess who the picky one is?

She loved the Kind Words ~ Rude Words activity a lot.  She has struggled with using polite words with people in the past but is much better now.

Hi Pizza Man Day -7751

Here’s a small video clip of us doing this activity.

Day Two

Our day began with her entering the schoolroom after fixing her own hair.  I asked if she wanted help with her headband and of course the answer was no. I’m kinda glad she said no, I like this look on her.

Hi Pizza Man -7807

She came in and began playing with her pizza stuff, pretending to eat it and bringing me pizza of course.

Hi Pizza Man -7810

We read the story together and then did our story sequencing activity, which she LOVED!

Hi Pizza Man -7817

Here’s a video of us doing this activity together,  You’ll notice in it she asks me if we can tape it together,  I had not planned on that but followed her lead!  You can see the finished product below in a photo!

Hi Pizza Man -7818

She turned the Make a Pizza craft into a big ordeal.  She divided it up into 4 parts and let all of us choose what we wanted on our piece.  We wrote our initial on what we ordered and she got busy.

Day Three

Day 3 began with reading the book again, but this time she read it to me!  After the first two pages she said she wanted to read it herself!

Hi Pizza Man -7872

After reading we just played pizza together.  The puppies came to the pizzeria and chose their toppings.

Hi Pizza Man -7875

We used the whole, 1/2, 1/3, and 1/4 parts from our pizza fraction game.

Hi Pizza Man -7877

Rhyming words

Hi Pizza Man -7879

Here’s a video clip of us working on rhyming words

We talked again about the character connection and how it related to this Bible verse.  We focused on using gentle words with others and role played a bit with this.  Then she illustrated the verse and wrote the word gentle.

Hi Pizza Man -7884

Here’s her final version…

Hi Pizza Man -8261

We got back out our graph from day 2 and recorded the results.  She wrote all of the numbers by herself!

Hi Pizza Man -7887

We also got out our pizza patterns from day 1 and glued a pattern down onto the long strip.

Hi Pizza Man -7894

Day Four

{this is week 2 of this unit, we did 3 days the first week}

We took advantage of beautiful weather and packed our school bags and headed up to our second story deck for a couple of hours one morning. My oldest son was there and so was my camera and he captured these shots of Ladybug and me reading together.

Hi Pizza Man -8060

Hi Pizza Man -8063

She made another pizza {she really likes cutting, gluing and pizza crafts}.

Hi Pizza Man -8069

We did our comprehension questions up on the deck.  She chose the questions out of the bag and I read them to her.

Hi Pizza Man -8092

Here’s a video of her answering the last one she pulled out.

Day Five

{this is week 3 of our unit, we traveled over the end of week 2 so finished up the following week}

We matched animals to their names and sounds…

Hi Pizza Man -8238

She called people and asked everyone in our house what their favorite pizza topping was for her graph.  She really enjoyed this and got to practice her phone skills too.  She even called Miss Yo {Jolanthe from Homeschool Creations}.

Hi Pizza Man -8240

Here’s a video of her calling to ask my mom

She wrote about her favorite animal in the story, with me spelling for her this time.

Hi Pizza Man -8246

What would a pizza unit be without making PIZZA?  She made us all lunch and was so very excited about it!
